THE CHURCHYARD GROUP

A number of volunteers take on the regular maintenance of the churchyard. Apart from mowing this involves any planting, pruning, weeding, mulching and culling that is required to encourage those plant species that are beneficial to wildlife whilst keeping the more invasive species under control.

Once spring arrives those areas that are kept mown (I.e. the area in front and around the entrance of the church, an area containing regularly tended graves at the western end of the churchyard, edges and pathways through the conservation areas) are cut on a regular basis, weather and manpower permitting.

In July and again in September 9 when our major Working Day takes place) we cut down the spring and summer meadows. This involves trimming off the seeding grasses and wild flowers, raking them up onto sheets, dragging the heaps of hay away to our large compost heap in the graveyard and finally mowing the areas. We try to ensure that all the grass is picked up so that the land is not enriched, as this would encourage the growth of the grass at the expense of the wild flowers. Although hard work the Working Day is a big social event in the church’s calendar and everyone involved always agrees it is great fun.

THE TUESDAY NIGHT FELLOWSHIP GROUP

This is a small group who meet on Tuesday evenings at the house of one of our members. It is a completely informal gathering at which we sing some worship songs, do some Bible study, discussing and exploring different aspects of our faith, perhaps watch relevant videos and follow that with a prayer time. We finish the evening with a cup of tea and a chat.
Apart from the friendship of the group, which is a great joy, it acts like a learning cell, allowing each person to ask their questions and put their point of view, whatever their degree of faith. If you are interested in joining us please contact Jean Mell on 01302771854, or come to see us in church.

FRIENDSHIP GROUP

This is a social group which meets in Finningley Village Hall on the second Monday in the month at 1.45 p.m. There is a different speaker each time covering a wide variety of topics, which in the past has included representatives from Traidcraft, the local M25 group (a charity working with the homeless), the Body Shop, local history, nature talks and sometimes travellers’ tales. It is rounded off with a cup of tea and a biscuit and finishes around 3.30 p.m.

There is no need to a announce your arrival beforehand, just turn up at the door.

PASTORAL CARE

There is a small group of people who keep a discreet eye over the villages, and check, where people are poorly and unable to get to church or even out of their own homes for a while or are lonely or distressed in any way, whether they might like a visit from someone within the church.

If anyone would like prayers to be said for themselves or others – please contact us via the rectory.

THE PARISH MAGAZINE

The Parish Magazine, published every two months, contains articles supplied by parishioners and is collated and arranged by Len Hornsby (len.hornsby@btinternet.com).

It is printed in the rectory and put together by a team of about six people before distribution throughout the parish. It can also be bought over the counter at the post office.
